What is Icon City? | Tell a Friend. Move a Community.

What is the one thing that’s not being done that if we did it would change everything? Is it possible to actually build a gathering that ended in a call to action?

Icon City is an ongoing, dynamic event that uses creative arts to shift public will toward serving and funding the care-giving service organizations of Central Oregon.

Bend, OR. – For over a year a group of volunteers have been working hard to meet basic physical needs in the Bend community. Many of these volunteers left careers and family in Georgia, Texas, Montana and parts in between to help form Icon City. This non-profit organization is run completely by volunteers, their aim is simple: meet the need.

Through regular distribution of food and supplies in Drake Park and establishing a special text program (BeRemedy Bend), Icon City has effectively changed lives and restored hope to many individuals and families. Their consistency has been the key to building strong relationships with other community leaders as well as those in need.

Come and see the change for yourself, as Icon City hosts free monthly live concerts at the Tower Theater. Music from a range of local Central Oregon musicians, guest speakers and more. Come and see how everyday citizens are transforming the landscape of Bend, and motivating others to step out and “BeRemedy” to the needs of this city.

Volunteer Connect – Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service

Posted on 01 January 2011 by Kryste Adams

“Make it a day on, not a day off!”

Volunteer Connect announces projects for the Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service

Volunteer Connect invites Central Oregonians of all ages to participate in our 2nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service!

Last year Volunteer Connect’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service engaged over 310 volunteers in 26 different projects for over 1000 hours of service to the community.

This year’s event on Monday, January 17th 2011 will feature 25 morning service projects with locations in Bend, Culver, La Pine, Prineville, Redmond and Sisters. Projects will take place from 9am-12pm and afterwards all volunteers are invited to a complimentary lunch and community discussion to reflect on their experience.

We have a great variety of projects this year! From helping with painting for Bend Habitat for Humanity’s Neighborhood Revitalization project to sorting food donations at the Redmond St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank we offer some great ways to contribute to your community.

For those with a crafty side, we have some special hands-on projects such as making floral arrangements for local hospice patients at Friends with Flowers, helping make fleece blankets for the annual One-Night Homeless count and making crafts for senior citizens and local veterans.

Projects are available for groups, individuals and volunteers of all ages and interested volunteers are encouraged to visit our webpage to sign-up for a project and to browse our full list of projects (www.volunteerconnectnow.org/MLK). Volunteer Connect also welcomes community members to contact us directly to discuss all the options personally (541-385-8977).
